Rochester Arts and Culture Collaborative January Newsletter

Happy 2016!

Are you keeping up with all that is happening around our fair city? Plays are opening, musicians are making music, new exhibits are showing, there are regular open mics and poetry readings - for example, how about this event happening January 28? Sounds great!

MLK Poetry Recital and Poetry Slam
Thursday, January 28, 4:00pm
Rochester Art Center
The winners of our annual Martin Luther King youth poetry contest will recite their works, followed by an adult poetry slam. Adult works should follow the same theme as the youth contest, which is a quote from Dr. King: "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend." All are welcome to attend! Free food and cash bar. Adults interested in performing at the poetry slam should send a sample of their work to Vangie at vangiec@diversitycouncil.org.

Use the power of the internet to discover all there is on offer to be a part of! The Diversity Council has an events page, the Rochester CVB does, the RDA, the Post Bulletin, KTTC among others. And don't hide your light under a bushel, either. Use these resources that are available to spread the word about your event!

Here are some updates on RACC teams and activities:

Art4Trails

This exciting project keeps moving forward! A panel met in January to make the selection of artists who will be doing installations along the bike trail (Slatterly Park to Silver Lake) in the summer of 2016. Five proposals out of 18 submissions were chosen. There will be an announcement party in February, so please keep your eyes and ears open for news of that.

Spaces

The spaces team is also making progress on their proposal for an Arts and Cultural Center at the Armory/Senior Center and we hope there will be a more formal announcement in the next month with further information about this.  Members of the team will be reaching out to artists, art organizations and cultural groups again with updates and new opportunities to join this venture. Letters of interest are a key part of the proposal, so we hope you will be open to this conversation when you are contacted. Please feel free to contact Debi Neville (nevilledl@yahoo.com) to express interest or find out more.

The Chateau Re-Use task force is still having their meetings and they are open to the public.  There is nothing scheduled on the city meeting calendar currently, but you may contact Lisa Mullenbach at City Hall to learn more.

Public Art

The Public Art Master Plan project spearheaded by the Greater Rochester Arts and Cultural Trust in conjunction with Forecast Public Art of St Paul, is in planning stages for community input. Please watch this space (email raccnews@gmail.com to get on the newsletter mailing list), our Facebook page, and Twitter feed (@raccmn) for news of feedback opportunities as soon as we learn of them. They are committed to a community-focussed master plan so please be ready to do your part and engage with the planners as they reach out.

That's all for this month. See you at the show/concert/opening/slam/gathering...!
